Lancaster

Lancaster County Bicycle Advisory Committee Votes Down Bike Lanes

Another Interesting article in the Lancaster New Era about bike lanes being proposed and consistently voted down by the county Bicycle Advisory Committee.

“The bike club said they are against it, but there are many cities where bike lanes have been done. Why should Lancaster be any different?” asked Katzenmoyer, who has accepted a position at Franklin & Marshall College and is soon leaving her City Hall post.

Bike lanes are successful in many cities, such as Seattle, she said, but they can also be done poorly. Ahlskog cited the death of a bicyclist in Cambridge, Mass., a few years ago. The rider was caught between a suddenly opened door from a parked car and a passing bus.

So is the Lancaster Bicycle Advisory Committee really looking out for the interests of all bicyclists in Lancaster County by waiting for the perfect bike lane? Or does the committee's record of opposing bike lanes reflect the idealogical doctrine of John Forester?

Bottom line, if you live in Lancaster County and support bike lanes then speak up and take a stand.

Madison - City of Bicycles

Madison - City of Bicycles

The recent Pro Walk Pro Bike conference took place last week in Madison WI - City of Bicycles, Bicycling Capital of the Midwest whatever. Low traffic gentle terrain and scenic lakes make bicycling here a treat. The Capital City Trail and the newly connected South West Commuter Path connect to all parts of the city and surrounding countryside.

PENNDOT Manpower Shortage Prevents Bike Lane Maintenance

PENNDOT Manpower Shortage Prevents Bike Lane Maintenance

An Article in the Lancaster New Era
"For two years, the three governmental bodies had been disputing who has responsibility for the clearing the bridge.

That dispute was settled by a ruling of the state Public Utility Commission in April. Manheim Township was given responsibility for clearing the pedestrian walkway on the Fruitville Pike bridge. Lancaster City was given responsibility for the walkway on the Lititz Pike bridge. And, PennDOT is responsible for the roadway from curb to curb on both bridges, the utility commission ordered.

PennDOT’s responsibility includes the bike lanes — the only ones that exist in the county..."

So Lancaster County Bike-Ped Advisory Committee Chair Mike Ridgeway took a broom to the bridge and a called a reporter to bring the problem to PENNDOT's attention. A spokesman for District 5 Maintenance reports that he is 10 men short and that there would be a long wait otherwise.

Bicyclists should not have to put themselves at risk to keep bike facilities maintained, they should always call PENNDOT Maintenance 1-800-FIX-ROAD before thinking about anything else.

NotCNN - Carnage on the Highways

NotCNN - Carnage on the Highways

115 Killed in Traffic Crashes, 7300 injured
15 Pedestrians, 6 Children and 2 Bicyclists among the dead

Black Boxes not found, NTSB Refuses to investigate, NHTSA says “Buckle UP”.

Another day of carnage as more than 100 deaths per day had been recorded on Americas highways for the 18,515th day in a row. This far exceeds the 17 known Sting Ray Deaths worldwide since 1860.

As a response to the carnage NHTSA recommends that we all crash safely by wearing your helmet when bicycling and wearing a seatbelt if you are in a car.

NotCNN interviewed an unidentified source at NHTSA who noted that traffic fatalities have declined 16% since 1979 and when you make the comparison of deaths to Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) there is a consistent decline and that thousands of lives have been saved.

However our source had no explanation for Canada’s success in reducing fatalities by 50% since 1979, other than speculating that Canada feels much more like Europe than the United States and therefore are less concerned about their privacy and right to drive.
