A Bicyclist's Route 202
PennDOT has sunk a lot of money into US 202 in the past few years. By 2016 between nearly $2 billion dollars will have been spent between the Delaware State Line and Doylestown. What is not as widely publicized is that a nearly contiguous bicycle route will be included along most of the corridor. 14 miles of trail are under construction right now: the US 202 Parkway in Bucks and Montgomery County and the Chester Valley Trail in Chester County.
US 202 Parkway - Shared Use Path and Bike Lanes
The first pictures of trail construction of the US 202 shared use path have shown up on the US 202 website in the vicinity of Welsh Rd in Montgomery Township. On the map the trail is a brown line. Note the neighborhood connection to the adjacent development. The Parkway will have a parallel 9 mile shared use path and on-road bike lanes.

Trail Construction in Chester County
The first phase of the Chester Valley Trail is currently about halfway through construction and should be open from Ship Road near Exton to Route 29 in the Malvern/Great Valley area in September. The trail will be paved.
Meanwhile construction is about to begin on the first phase of Schuylkill River Trail in Chester County from Township Line Road in Cromby to Linfield Road in Parkers Ford also in the fall of 2010. However the surface will be crushed stone similar to the Perkiomen Trail. It remains a possibility that this section of trail will be paved with asphalt in the future.

The Delaware Canal Towpath
The National Weather Service is forecasting that Delaware River will crest below flood stage on Wednesday, that's very good news as restoration of the canal towpath from Yardley to Easton will be completed in May.

Construction of the D&R Canal Connector Path from Old Rose to Mulberry St in Trenton began in October and is expected to be completed this Spring. It will connect the main towpath (Trenton to New Brunswick) with the feeder canal towpath (Trenton to Milford).
Also the Bulls Island Footbridge has been reopened. It is a major connection between the D&R and Delaware Canal Towpaths. The Bulls Island Recreation Area was closed for repairs until last Wednesday.
Suburban Bike Routes
The three suburban on-road bicycling improvements projects are now underway. According to Phillytraffic.com Old Baltimore Pike and Susquehanna Road now have traffic restrictions due to the construction:

- Chester County - Old Baltimore Pike is now under construction in Old Baltimore Pike, London Grove, Avondale Townships - Road Widening: LANE RESTRICTIONS between PA 41 & Scarlett Rd. 7 AM - 3 PM. - 3/22/10-4/22/10
- Montgomery County - Susquehanna Rd., Abington Twp. - Line Striping: LANE CLOSURES between Ft. Washington Rd. & Old York Rd. 7 AM - 3 PM. - 3/29/10-4/2/10
- The two above projects along with Delaware County's Bicyclists Baltimore Pike are scheduled to be complete by June 1.

Kelly Drive Path Falls Bridge to Ridge Avenue

While nice that the section of the Rt 202 project shown thought about the need for bikes, that entire section of northern Montgomery and southern Bucks county is extremely hostile to biking due to the arterial / cul-de-sac nature of the roadway network.
The real effect of this project will be to encourage more sprawl further north into some very nice biking country in northern Bucks county.
