Some would ask, "Why not just pave the Manayunk Towpath?" Well, for one thing, that would take away its aesthetic and historical charm. But more importantly, with the narrow clearance, low-hanging limbs (and even trunks), and the canal just a few feet away, paving the towpath would encourage unsafe speeding. It is an accident or lawsuit waiting to happen.

I like the viaduct proposal because once and for all, cyclists could bypass the gruelling hilly section and the congestion in Manayunk. That said, crossing the river twice within less than a mile is silly, and should be avoided if possible. If one were to use this new path (if completed) and then wanted to use West River Drive to get to the Art Museum, it would require crossing the Schulykill four times!

But most people would still rather do that that grunt up 7 or 9 per cent grades or have to share Main Street with flustered drivers. Me too.
