What Are Environmental Groups Doing For Bikes?

The inconvenient truth is ... surprisingly little, especially in the fight to curb global warming. There is lots of talk about hybrid vehicles, biodiesel and higher fuel economy standards. But when it comes to bicycling or walking you have to dig pretty deep into the enviro websites before you see these modes, ironically they often mentioned under "What Can YOU do".

None of the "green car" strategies are as cheap, efficient and healthy as bicycling or walking. A Hummer in the garage consumes less fuel than a Prius clocking 50 miles a day. Would raising fuel economy standards really have a greater impact on global warming than creating opportunities to reduce vehicle trips?

Those of us advocating for cycling must make amends with the Environmental Community if we want to be a force to be reckoned with, otherwise bicyclists of the future will be at the mercy of electric SUV's driven out of TND neighborhoods.
