Bicycle Coalition Makes Strike News Stories

Bicycle Coalition Makes Strike News Stories

Strike buzz has produced some decent press coverage for the Bicycle Coalition. Executive Director Alex Doty made it on Channel 6 at 6PM

And at Channel 3 at 4PM

Channel 3's coverage was slightly more in depth as they talked about the
bike station and Alex also was able to announce the hours that bike station
will be open.

This Morning's Philadelphia Inquirer also quoted Alex in their strike headline
"Alex Doty, executive director of the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, said a 'valet park' for bicycle riders would operate on the plaza of the Municipal Services Building. He said bikers could park their bikes in a guarded area from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m."

Probably most significant was the article on page 5 of yesterday's metro newspaper, whose readership is mostly SEPTA riders.

News Feed - National Bicycle Deaths for October 13-21

Compilation of National Bicycle Deaths for October 13-21

This web page compiled from a Google News Search. Has links to articles on 20 fatal bicycle crashes that appeared in news articles nationwide from last Friday to today
http://www.bicyclecoalition.org/Fatalities_10-05.htm

Some were matter of factly police blotter preports while others were profiled the victims. It appears that a disproportionate number of crashes were on US Highways or other multi-lane roads. And many were at night. Several involved large trucks.

NBC 6 in Miami's article on a cyclist crossing a highway has a series of crash scene photos.

Lower Bucks County - Bicyclists Pedestrians Be Damned

Lower Bucks County and its Incomplete Streets

Perhaps the Location with the most pedestrian and bicyclists and the least accommodating roads are in . Nowhere in the region is the mismatch between pedestrian volume and horrid highway conditions more evident than in the communities of Lower Bucks County in Bristol Bensalem and Falls Township. Ask any driver in Bensalem if they ever had a close call with a pedestrian walking in the road?

Kudos by the way to Bucks County Courier Times who continue to focus on this very issue. In 2004 they wrote an article about pedestrian safety on major roads such as Route 13, the deadliest highway in SE PA. Perhaps the most disturbing statement in the article "In (former District 6-0 Director Andrew) Warren's words, the agency works "curb to curb" focusing on vehicles, not pedestrians."

In another recent article it appears that even some elected officials are down on sidewalks

Bensalem Councilman Joseph Pilieri and Upper Southampton Supervisors Chairman Walter C. Stevens both said pedestrian deaths don't occur because of a lack of sidewalks.

"There's no relation between sidewalk accessibility and pedestrian deaths," said Stevens, who was a police officer for 31 years"

UM then how do you explain this study;

Synthesis of Safety Research - Pedestrians
August 1991 Pub. no. FHWA-SA-91-034 page 83

A 1983 study by Tobey et. al. [1] investigated the safety effects of sidewalks. Sites with no sidewalks or pathways were the most hazardous for pedestrians, with pedestrian hazard scores of +2.6 and a PxV exposure score (i.e. exposure measure includes pedestrian volumes times traffic volume) of +2.2. This indicates that accidents at sites without sidewalks are more than twice as likely to occur than expected. Sites with sidewalks on one side of the road had a pedestrian volume and PxV hazard scores of +1.2 and +1.1, compared to scores of -1.2 and -1.2 for sites with sidewalks on bothsides of the road. Thus, sites with no sidewalks were the most hazardous to pedestrians, and least hazardous where sidewalks are present on both sides of the road.

Then there is route 413, the project description and sounds like they were doing the right thing improving the streetscape. Pedestrian and Bicycle accommodations were to be included in this new road.

Well no bike lanes, got sidewalks among hundreds of driveways and there are 5 lanes of speeding traffic. In fact complaints and crashes appear on a regular basis and so much so that it compelled Bristol Township Police to implement a rare driver crackdown last spring.

More PENNDOT and Streets Department Criticism

More PENNDOT and Streets Department Criticism

The latest comes from Architectural Critic Inga Saffron in the Inquirer, on poor pedestrian connections to the Cira Center. In today's article Changing Skyline, Cool Beauty Saffron describes the pedestrian access to the building

"The poor pedestrian conditions are a direct result of the anti-urban policies of PennDot and the city Streets Department.

Amtrak had asked PennDot to install a midblock traffic light on Arch Street because it is the most intuitive crossing point between the station and Cira. But PennDot vetoed the request. Instead, it put new lights at the corners of 29th and 30th Streets. As long as those traffic patterns exist, no sensible person will dare cross Arch Street because of the way drivers race around the station. As a result, Cira's sidewalks were narrowed to discourage people from attempting to walk to the building.

Yet another recent PENNDOT decision that favors motorized traffic flow over the poor pedestrian.

Route 73 Disappoints

Route 73 Disappoints

Another suburban project goes wanting.

Route 73 Township Line Road on the Abington and Cheltenham Township line is nearly complete or shall I say incomplete (as in an incomplete street).

Lack of sufficient right of way for bicycles and pedestrian facilities, yet plenty of land was taken for a bus pullout. So you can get off the bus but you have nowhere to go.

Excessively wide center turn lanes, on a road with very few commercial driveways this simply does not make any sense. Although there is sufficient room for cars to pass the line striping tracks cars very close to the curb. Even if the turn lanes were justified bicycles could easily have been accommodated with smaller turn lanes and 14' wide travel lanes.

Bike the Strike Update

Bike the Strike Update

Today TWU Local 234 announced a strike deadline of October 31. The dispute continues to be the loss of health benefits.

So remember that Bicycle Coalition has set up a bike the strike webpage and blog. These will help provide bike commuters with bike parking and commuting tips. We hope to have a bike parking facility up and running and we will be taking bike counts at the key locations in Center City.
