Outgoing state Sen. James S. Cafiero, R-Cape May, Cumberland,
Atlantic, does not think the final section of Route 55 will ever be
built.

The price tag for the final 20-mile stretch of the road through
Cumberland and Cape May counties is more than $500 million.

Additionally, construction of the roadway faces numerous
environmental problems that Cafiero contends could have been avoided
if the roadway was built decades ago.

"They should have done it back in the 1960s when nobody really
focused on the environmental," Cafiero said. "I don't know if it's
ever going to be finished now."
