We were pleased to learn yesterday that our submission of an art bike rack program was one of 69 finalists picked in the Knight Arts Challenge.
Our proposal looks at bike racks as an underused source of street art. We proposed a competition among local artists to design and install bike racks which would pull double duty as public art and utilitarian street furniture. Distinctive bike racks will enliven our streetscapes and deepen Philadelphia's image as a rich city for both bicycling and art.
There are many impressive projects listed among the finalists, and no doubt many more that did not make the cut. We're excited to be in the running and are looking forward to the winners being announced in the spring.
