75 Philly Stolen Bikes Recovered And On Display Wednesday

The Philadelphia Police Department recovered around 75 stolen bicycles from one of those awful dog fighting/bike theft rings we read about so often in the news.

They will be exhibiting them on Wednesday at the Major Crimes Unit facility in Juniata Park in the Northeast. If you've had your bike stolen in Philly, and have some way of proving it's yours, it might be worth heading up there. Below is the press release from the police (original link here).

Philadelphia Police Department Recovers Stolen Bicycles

Recovered Bicycles will be on Display Wednesday March 28, 2012 between 11am and 7pm at Macalester Street and Whitaker Avenue

March 26, 2012

On Friday, March 23, 2012, at approximately 2:00 PM, Homicide Detectives went to a residence on the 2200 block of West Lehigh Avenue and arrested a suspect. While on the premises they observed evidence of illegal dog fighting. The PASPCA was contacted and a search warrant for the premises was obtained.   Rescued from the location were 11 dogs, some scarred from fighting, along with equipment used to breed and train dogs for fighting. During the course of serving their warrant they observed a large number of bicycles, many "high end" stored in the basement. They believed these bicycles to be stolen and contacted the Major Crimes Unit.
Investigators from the Major Crimes Unit arrived on scene and recovered approximately 75 bikes. The bicycles were taken to Major Crimes Headquarters located at Whitaker and Macalester Streets where a detailed list of the recovered bicycles which includes make, model, color and serial numbers was constructed. The list is being compared to bike theft report entries to determine owners. Bicycles whose ownership cannot be determined will be on display at the Major Crimes Unit facility at Whitaker Avenue and Macalester Streets on Wednesday, March 28, 2012, between 11 AM and 7 PM only. People are encouraged to bring whatever they may have to help prove ownership in addition to a complaint number from any police reports they filed in regard to the thefts.
Any questions can be directed to the Major Crimes Unit 215-686-3396 between 8 AM and 4 PM.
