The League of American Bicyclists, the Alliance for Biking and Walking, and Bikes Belong announced today that they will be merging to form one national group advocating for bicyclists. We have been affiliates or members of the League and the Alliance for decades and have received a number of grants from the industry group Bikes Belong. While the reasons for creating each group made sense at the time, it's welcome news that the growing bicycle movement will unify our nationwide voice in one group.
There were many actors in this important merger but we owe a special thanks to the former President of the Bicycle Coalition Board of Directors, Hans van Naerssen. Hans started his bike advocacy career working for better streets for biking and walking in Treddyfrin Township. He took on a leadership role in the expansion of the Bicycle Coalition before becoming the Chair of the Board of the League of American Bicyclists. Hans has spoken about a vision of one national organization for a number of years and his dedication and hard work were key to making it possible.
Ride on, Hans!
