Amtrak Reauthorization May Include Money for Bike Racks

The House passed H.R. 6003 which authorizes appropriations for Amtrak for Fiscal Years 2009-2013. An Amendment to the bill offered by Congressman Oberstar passed that included language to accommodate bikes on trains.

"..authorize intercity passenger rail grants to be used for bicycle access into rolling stock and would provide bicycle racks in trains..."

That bill has to be reconciled with the Senate version and the amendment is expected to be included.

Bike Racks on Amtrak's Cascades service which runs from Eugene Oregon to Vancouver BC.

If this is to be so and Amtrak puts bike racks onto Keystone Service, I will ride Keystone even more than I do now (2 - 3 Round trips a month). I guarantee loads of others will take advantage of it as well.

The quality of passenger services at the present time is rather important. The company should necessarily operate across the whole country to be able to stay on the market. At www.pissedconsumer.com I found out that Amtrak is the National Railroad Passenger Corporation. The company operates passenger service on routes across the continental United States of America connecting hundreds of destinations in 48 states; routes to Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. In addition to the passenger service, Amtrak expanded into freight transportation market and now operates a captive bus service. I think the company is worth trusting.
