Crash Statistics to Die For

Crash Statistics to Die For

The number of annual bicycle miles traveled in the Netherlands and the US
are basically the same ...
USA - 6.2 Billion Miles
NL - 8 Billion Miles

....yet the fatalities for US cyclists is 4 times higher.
USA 2001 - 730
NL 1998 - 194

(Jacobson-Safety in Numbers and National Household Travel
Survey
, NHTSA FARS Database)

If you double the number of bicyclists you then each cyclist’s crash risk
is reduced by a third
(Jacobson - Safety in Numbers)

66 percent of all annual traffic fatalities are caused by aggressive driving
(NHTSA)

In NYC per mile driven, male drivers killed bicyclists at 10 times the rate
of female drivers. (Charles Komanoff - The Only Good Cyclist)

20% of drivers do not know that a pedestrian has the right of way at a
marked or unmarked crosswalk. (GMAC National Drivers Test)

The urbanized Northeast and Mid Atlantic achieved the lowest scores on a
sample drivers test(GMAC National Drivers Test)

A pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle at:
20 mph has a 5% chance of being killed
30 mph has a 40% chance of being killed
40 mph has a 85% chance of being killed
(U.K. Department of Transport)

Do you think we have a problem here?

Attention all Ped Heads!

Attention all Ped Heads!

No, its not an optical illusion, the Streets Department really has installed pedestrian countdown signals at 10th/Market and Broad/Walnut.

One minor quibble, the countdown doesn't start until the red hand starts flashing (just 7 seconds on Market St), seeing the entire walk phase countdown is very useful. As cyclists in Washington DC know the countdown "Ped Heads" are a great tool if you are trying to "make the light".

Mainstream Sports Media Ingores Cycling Race

Mainstream Sports Media Ignores Cycling Race

Here's the general rule about US sports coverage of Pro Cycling. "No Lance, No coverage." The co-sponsors of this year's Commerce Bank Triple Crown of Cycling and Liberty Classic are Channel 6 and WMMR. KYW and CN8 may offer a mention to fill a need for stories but don't expect Fox, NBC 10 or Channel 3 sportcasters to pay any mind.

Bob Costas once described bike racing as watching exercise and many other sportscasters have similar sentiments (Gas guzzling, noise deafening, pollution spewing, spectator killing NASCAR however is rarely described as driving around in a circle).

So 300,000-500,000 spectators will line the streets of the event and spend millions of dollars in the city, but if a tree falls in the woods...

Hit and Run at 55th and Lancaster

Hit and Run at 55th and Lancaster

Last Wednesday, May 31st, sophomore student in Materials Science and Engineering, Doug Markgraf was struck in a hit and run accident while riding his bicycle along Lancaster Ave near 55th Street. Doug was sent to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania unconscious and with several broken bones and serious head injuries. He remains unconscious in an induced coma but is making progress.

Police are still searching for the driver of the vehicle, a white 2004--2006 year Dodge Quad Cab pickup truck. It is likely to have significant grill damage and at the time of the accident had an ATV in the bed.
