Rep. Joe Hoeffel leads boat tour of the North Delaware Riverfront.

Yesterday several area politicians surveyed the ambitious plan to develop a greenway and housing along the largely abandoned properties in Northeast Philadelphia along the riverfront. Here is the Channel 6 news report on the event.

Mapquest for Bikes!

Check out this new service for the Greater Los Angeles Area www.bikemetro.com. Click on Bike Routes to access the Trip Planner. Former LA area cyclists tell us that the generated maps and directions work very well. You can adjust your bike trip by skill level. Talk at the Bicycle Coalition suggests that there is a demand for this service which would complement the Regional Bike Map.

Woodhaven Road Extension bad for Bikes?

I don't know and I can't tell from this website. There has been no analysis on how the highway, road widenings, ramps and turn lanes will affect bicycle travel. This is something that many traffic engineers refuse to do. The environmental impact statement gives a few scant references on bicycling and one alternative does state the Byberry Road will be more accommodating for bikes.

You can comment on the environmental impact statement you can find out how here, they will not accept email (eliminating email comments has become a common tactic to reduce public input).

Malcolm on the Bike Rack?

In a preview of the Season finale of "Malcolm in the Middle". (Sunday at 9 on Fox 29) The father Hal is seen wrapped in a huge orange stretcher being carried on a bus bike rack along with his bike. The joke being that he cannot fit inside the the bus so he has to ride on the rack. Very Bizarre.
Bridge now open til 10

The Delaware River Port Authority announced today that it will extend
the hours of walkway on the Benjamin Franklin Bridge beginning Friday,
May 16. The walkway will be open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a
week. The extended hours will be in effect through mid-September.

Either the north walkway or the south walkway - but not both - will be
open, depending on construction activities. The south walkway provides a
view of downtown Philadelphia and Campbell's Field, home of the Camden
Riversharks. Fans of the Camden Riversharks who live in Philadelphia can
now walk or ride their bicycles across the walkway to Campbell's Field
and cross back to Philadelphia at the end of the game.

Folding chairs, "picnicking," skateboards, skates and alcoholic
beverages are prohibited. Excessive congregation is discouraged. DRPA
Police will patrol the walkways.

Neighborhood Bike Works UPCOMING EVENTS

This Week:
Saturday 5/10/03

Please come out and attend or help with one of these events
***Lower Merion bike roundup take two.***

We will once more be at 1300 N Woodbine in Lower Merion from 8:00 to 5:00 Saturday and Sunday. We especially need help at the end of the day on Sunday at the recycling center (3:30-5:00), and back at NBW at around 5:30-6:00 to load in the bikes. We will be riding out there with some kids on Saturday. On Sunday, we need some people who can transport some youth to and from the event and who can perhaps move some bikes in a pickup. Please call or e-mail for a shift and directions.

**Tour De Sol***

NBW will be at the Ben Franklin Parkway near Love Park for this Solar Powered Car race and alternative fuel vehicle exhibition. 10:00-2:30 Tuesday 5/13. Any Volunteers for this event would be most welcome, especially for the clean up at the end!

***Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia's Bike To Work Day: ***
This is going to be a lunchtime event this year on Friday 5/16 on the West side of City Hall. NBW will be running the bike parking there and generally taking part in the festivities.

Last but not least, the most important thing we are asking you to take part in this time is the Art Auction fundraiser. Molly Mullahy has organized this, but can't be there at the show all the time.

The Show is at the Central Library, 1901 Vine Street

The show must be staffed for the hours stated:

Sunday June 1st: 1-5pm
Monday-Thursday 9am-9pm
Friday 9am-6pm
Saturday 9am-5pm,

Call or e-mail if you can sit with our art for some of this time. This will not be hard work. If you are reading or studying it could be ideal.
