D rides in South Jersey, Rides for the Rest of Us
Check out Saturday's Philadelphia Inquirer with one of our favorite reporters Don Sapatkin. The Outdoor Club of South Jersey Member Maggi Heineman hosts a website that covers OCSJ D Rides in South Jersey.
Fostering new members and those who want to go on a bike ride to simply to go on a bike ride is good for bicycling and the ensures the survivability of the bike clubs. I hope this website starts a trend.

Survey Northeast Drivers are the Worst in the Nation
Survey Northeast Drivers are the Worst in the Nation
From CNN:
When faced with a written test, similar to ones given to beginning drivers applying for licenses, one in ten drivers couldn't get a passing score, according to a study commissioned by GMAC Insurance. The GMAC Insurance National Driver's Test found that nearly 20 million Americans, or about 1 in 10 drivers, would fail a state driver's test if they had to take one today. GMAC Insurance is part of General Motors' finance subsidiary, GMAC. More than 5,000 licensed drivers between the ages of 16 and 65 were administered a 20-question written test designed to measure basic knowledge about traffic laws and safety. They were also surveyed about their general driving habits.
Drivers in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic states did worst. Twenty percent of test-takers failed there. The state of Rhode Island leads the nation in driver cluelessness, according to the survey. The average test score there was 77, just eight points above a failing grade.

Celebrity Bike Quote of the Month
According to Hollywood.com Actor Val Kilmer has been ordered to apologize to Transport of London bus drivers after he accused them of being drug addicts.
"It's so easy to get round this town on a bike, but the traffic can be really hectic, and your bus drivers are definitely on crack."

Ben Stiller Bike Mugged?
Ben Stiller Bike Mugged?
According to the Friday May 6th Howard Stern Show Synopsis as posted on MarksFriggin.com "Ben Stiller had his bicycle stolen while he was riding to work at the Broadway play he's appearing in. A teen ran out of an alley, knocked Ben on his ass and stole the bike. Ben limped away and hailed a cab after trying to chase down the kid."
This confirms that some NRDC type New York celebs are closet bike commuters. Stern commented on his show that "No way is Ben Stiller on a bike". Matthew Broderick noted on Letterman once that he has had 6 bikes stolen. Sounds like this guy needs to look into better bike locks.

Thoughts on the Bicycle Education Leaders Conference
Thoughts on the Bicycle Education Leaders Conference
I just returned from LAB's Bicycle Education Leaders Conference in New York this past week. The overwhelming theme this year was marketing bicycle education. According to Executive Director Andy Clarke LAB's LCI's through training and other local bike advocacy education initiatives have reached about 500,000 people in the past year. LAB plans to double the availability of LCI courses this year.
But that is less than 1% of the nations 80 Million Cyclists. Just as important, how do reach the nations 200+ million motorists.
Mr. Clarke went on in his opening speech to estimate that you may realistically be able to give school students up to 4 hours of training, a typical bicyclists maybe a half hour. The motoring majority about 30 seconds.
I was also impressed on the closing plenary which featured NY Transit Division Police Chief Scagnelli. This guy looks and talks like Robert DeNiro and he scared the hell out of me. But his TrafficStat program (modeled after NYPD's crimefighting CompStat) uses GIS and results oriented accountability to reduce bike/ped/auto crashes. The results have been dramatic, in 2004 NYC had the fewest traffic fatalities since 1908!
A memorable quote from Chief Scagnelli "The penalty for error should not be death".
The next conference will be in Austin in 2007, I am hoping that we can feature an improved and robust beach bike safety program in that conference.
